Peppermint is a cure for indigestion, and the active ingredient in peppermint oil is
menthol. After a big meal, gas building up in your stomach can cause cramping. But, menthol
relaxes the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, allowing trapped gas to escape
upward as a welcome, pressure-relieving burp. Menthol is a mild anesthetic that can block pain and nausea signals by numbing nerves in the "gut," including those that would normally prompt nearby muscles to contract. One result is fewer muscle spasms that cause some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But, this whole process can also allow stomach acids to splash up into the esophagus, causing heartburn in those who are prone to heartburn.
Those who are prone to heartburn should drink peppermint tea (three to four cups a day) instead of using peppermint oil. The tea will help indigestion but does not contain enough menthol to cause heartburn.
All who do ingest peppermint oil should use coated capsules and not undiluted peppermint oil itself.
Notes: 1) The respiration of a baby can be slowed down or even stopped if peppermint oil or menthol is close enough for the baby to even breathe either one. 2) Peppermint tea or menthol cough drops should not be given to children under five since it can cause a choking sensation. 3) High blood pressure may be elevated by large doses of peppermint essential oil. 4) Large doses of peppermint oil may be harmful during pregnancy.
One cause of hoarseness is GERD or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease. Researchers have found that many cases of adult asthma and hoarseness are caused by the regurgitation of stomach juices into the throat and lungs. Those suffering from heartburn or digestive problems and who are hoarse should start by improving the digestive imbalance.
Taking a mixture of 1 to 2 teaspoons equally of natural apple cider vinegar and raw honey in a glass of distilled water before meals should prevent heartburn. Natural apple cider vinegar also promotes digestion, assimilation and elimination, and it neutralizes any toxic substance taken into the body. If you just don't like the taste of vinegar, you can take natural apple cider vinegar tablets and wash them down with honey water.
Acidophilus yogurt will prevent indigestion. It contains Lactobacillus Acidophilus (or L Acidophilus), which is a good bacteria that fights bad bacteria. Lactobacillus Acidophilus can be found in several forms: probiotic acidophilus capsules, chewable acidophilus, Liquid Acidophilus, and Acidophilus Powder .
Eating several almonds will relieve heartburn.
Eating lemons or lemon rind before meals can prevent heartburn.
Lying on your left side can help relieve heartburn by keeping the stomach below the esophagus and acid-free.
Eat dried figs, fresh pineapple, and dried or fresh papaya. These foods are loaded with digestive enzymes.
