Why Good Suppliers are Critical to Powerseller SuccessEveryone wants to get powerseller status on eBay. Not only does it mean increased credibility and status, which translates into more traffic and sales; but as of 2008, the powerseller logo combined with good feedback also enables sellers to get up to 40% rebate on fees. All in all, powerseller status is a massive advantage. But, in your hurry to fulfill the criteria, have you considered whether your business is structured in a way that will allow you to profitably maintain powerseller status? Unfortunately, too many sellers rush into powerseller status without making sure their product supplier streams are set up to cope with an increase in sales volume. If you are still getting bits and pieces from liquidators, eBay itself, local suppliers, or just wherever takes your fancy, then you are not setting up a scalable business. Simon Slade from SaleHoo Product Sourcing Directory advises that an eBay business is most efficient when most of its product supply is coming from just two to three suppliers. "You need to develop close working relationships with a couple of suppliers who will provide you with 80% of your products," he says. "This not only makes your business more cost-effective, but, if you are just working from deal to deal, you have to consider what happens if supply suddenly dries up? You could find yourself without a business." Slade says he’s seen some sellers in trouble simply because they didn’t bother to plan for the future. When these sellers encounter busy periods, they have to run around like headless chickens organizing little deals here and there (and probably paying too much for some of their stock out of desperation), because they haven’t considered how to fulfill the increase in orders their growing business is encountering. Ideally, a powerseller should be able to rely on their suppliers to the point where this part of their business is almost fully automated. SaleHoo also emphasize the importance of choosing suppliers who are big enough to keep up as your business grows. "Your wholesaler should be big enough to handle orders of increasing size and number, otherwise you’ll be in for some major growing pains," he explains. "Everyone thinks about what happens if they don’t get enough orders, but many fail to consider what they’ll do if they get too many!" SaleHoo Product Sourcing directory includes a contact person for each of their listed suppliers, and they encourage all members to deal directly with that person and focus on building up a relationship if they want to maintain profitability as a powerseller.
